Custodial history
The Supreme Court of Newfoundland transferred these records to the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1984. Due to their physical condition at the time of transfer, all records were microfilmed in 1997-1998 to preserve the information.

Scope and content
Collection consists of primarily probate and estate cases, usually documenting claims by debtors. The files also include suits against insolvent businesses for monies owed to claimants. Some cases deal with the guardianship of children [minors] or the handicapped. There are also civil cases, such as fraud, forgery, counterfeiting of currency, property disputes and/or damages, arson, and insurance conflicts, including allegations of "wrecking" (deliberate plundering of vessels).

Although predominantly probate and estate records, the collection also includes cases of assault, manslaughter, concealment of birth, murder, indecent assault and rape, and smuggling. Scattered among the records are grand jury presentments, copies of the Royal Gazette (that published legal notices) as well as criminal and correctional statistics.

Documents include writs, notices, judgments, and orders. However, the wills are not attached.

Physical condition
At the time of transfer to the Provincial Archives, many of the files were already badly damaged by pest infestations, active mould and water damage. Based on conservator's recommendations, the records were microfilmed. Originals are not available to the public.

Alpha-numeric numbers
The numbering system is based on the frame numbers as designated on the microfilm. Unfortunately, original file numbers were not retained. At times, patience is required to sort through the individual files.

Arrangement
Collection is arranged in series based on microfilm reel number. Often more than one reel was required for a single year; there are also overlapping years.
